Singer/Songwriters Sarah Siskind & Travis Book in Hickory, NC
A couple of weeks ago we heard that singer/songwriter Sarah Siskind was traveling through North Carolina and making a stop in Hickory, NC for a Friday evening show with Travis Book (from the band "The Stringdusters") on the downtown Square under the sails.
We first discovered Sarah's music when she came to Charlotte with "Ten out of Tenn" back in 2009. The show was incredible! Huge fans of these guys, we were super excited to go see them!
“Born and raised in North Carolina, Sarah built her musical career in Nashville, TN. Her 2009 release “Say it Louder” was crowned ‘Americana Album of the Year’ at the Nashville Music Awards. In 2011, Sarah’s album “Novel” highlighted her as the sole musician, producer and engineer. Bonnie Raitt had this to say about it: “With Novel, Sarah has created another extraordinary collection of some of the most beautiful and unique songs you’re likely to hear. She continues to be one of my favorite singers and songwriters. She absolutely knocks me out.”
“Siskind’s songs are heavily featured on ABC’s hit TV show Nashville and she recently made her primetime television debut in the music special “Nashville: On the Record”, performing her song “A Life That’s Good” with the show’s cast. Other television shows that have featured Sarah’s songs are MTV’s Teen Mom 2, MTV’s Awkward, ABC’s Pretty Little Liars, Lifetime’s Army Wives and HBO’s The Wire.”
“...Her music has been classified as: rock, folk, americana, and alternative. Alison Krauss has championed Sarah and values her songs so highly that she’s recorded two of them, both of which became singles and videos that received widespread airplay...”
While there we picked up some new music, and I found a beautiful pair of earrings handmade by Sarah...
“As a lover of art and all things creative, I’ve always had a soft spot for earrings and jewelry. I love design. Every pair of earrings I own has a story and different combinations of color, shape and image can evoke in me emotions similar to when I hear a song that moves me.
Since I was a child, I’ve collected beads and always dreamed of making jewelry one day. As some of you know, I’ve toured lots and lots over the last several years and along the way I’ve found myself at bead shops, vintage stores and local street fairs from Chicago to London to Dublin to LA to Boston. You get the point...but immersing myself in visuals and design while on the road is always a cool break from music for my brain.
Every time I come home off the road, I nest. My ritual as of late has been making jewelry out of the beads I’ve collected on tour. The earrings you see here are not just pieces of me, but of my travels as a musician. I’m thrilled to get to share these with you...”
“As word continued to spread of Siskind’s unique artistry and songs, other singers across genres started covering them, most notably Alison Krauss, who earned a Grammy nomination for her performance of ‘Simple Love.’”
