Kristina + Dennis– 1950’s Engagement Shoot: Behind the Scenes

IMG_0717-Edit.jpg
So yesterday we did a post with a few of the photos from our 1950’s engagement session with Kristina + Dennis. (If you missed it you can check it out HERE) We wanted to share with you a bit of what went on behind the scenes to make this shoot happen! We absolutely LOVE doing styled and themed photo sessions. It’s so much fun to plan, gather props, brainstorm ideas with each other and with our clients, and not to mention hair, make-up, and styling! It’s so awesome to see everything come together when we’re on location doing the photoshoot!
We went for a “timeless” 1950’s theme, so we wanted to make sure the hair, make-up, and clothing/accessories were as authentic-looking at possible. Tabatha Hefner, from Salon Beyond in Hickory, NC worked with us on the shoot and did a fabulous job (as ALWAYS) on hair styling and make-up. She worked with us on location to make sure hair/make-up was always looking great through the whole shoot, and she also changed everything up with each wardrobe change to fit the look we were going for. We could not have done it without her. It really does make such a difference.

Our first location was at the Soda Shop in Davidson, so we wanted a “1950’s Casual” look and kept the make-up more minimal for the first look…

Kristina actually put together the wardrobe for the shoot! She did such a fabulous job, we asked her if she had any tips/advice for our readers…

“I tend to be drawn to things that have a more classic/timeless style in general, so I was able to use some pieces that I already owned, which is convenient!  I love shopping at thrift stores, Etsy, and on websites such as modcloth.com and unique-vintage.com. To me, the wonderful thing about vintage items or vintage-style items is that you can make them your own style by complimenting them with different accessories or modern pieces. It is so much fun!”

“For the diner outfit, I wanted something very simple and cute, and something that might actually be worn out on a diner date. I found the cute yellow dress on Etsy and paired it with a white cardigan I already owned.  I added some simple white canvas sneakers that can be found anywhere from Payless to Target, and the look was complete!”

“For the pictures taken at the Beaver Dam House, I found the floral dress at a thrift store. It had a very large overlying collar and tie on the front. I actually cut that off and stitched up the dress to have a much simpler, and plainer top that better suited me and my style. The shoes were found at a Goodwill, and were Steve Madden brand, so not exactly vintage, but I felt they had a very vintage look. The gold locket was given to me as a gift by my fiancé a few years ago, and is actually from the 40's or 50's. I think he may have purchased it on a website like Etsy.”

“And the red polka dot dress was purchased new on Unique-vintage.com.  It was a birthday gift from my fiancé this year. It is a 1950's style retro swing dress that could be worn with a crinoline for formal occasions, or worn without one for more casual events or date nights :) The white tie cardigan worn with that dress was purchased at Delias, and I chose it simply for the tie front, because I felt that was very reminiscent of the 50's.  And the white pumps were found at Payless. And of course, pearl earrings were worn with all the outfits, because they are my favorite.”

“For my fiancé's attire, the only thing we purchased additional for him that he didn't already have was the black argyle cardigan (which came from Target). The wonderful thing about men's fashion is that plaid shirts and jeans have always been in style.  So we basically went with whatever shirt/pant combinations looked best with my outfits, haha. And the hats helped pull the looks together.”
